Doppler Ultrasound The doppler shift principle has been used for a long time in fetal heart rate detectors. Further developments in doppler ultrasound technology in recent years have enabled a great expansion in its application in Obstetrics, particularly in the area of assessing and monitoring the well-being of the fetus, its progression in the face of intrauterine growth restriction, and the diagnosis of cardiac malformations. Doppler ultrasound is presently most widely employed in the detection of fetal cardiac pulsations and pulsations in the various fetal blood vessels. The “Doptone” fetal pulse detector is a commonly used handheld device to detect fetal heartbeat using the same doppler principle. Blood flow characteristics in the fetal blood vessels can be assessed with Doppler ‘flow velocity waveforms’. Diminished flow, particularly in the diastolic phase of a pulse cycle is associated with compromise in the fetus.

All pregnant women in our technology-happy modern society face confusing choices about prenatal testing, its advantages and disadvantages, and its appropriateness for them. Large pregnant women face even more confusion, since prenatal testing can be slightly harder in this population, and the results can be more confusing.

Many women have all the traditional pregnancy symptoms like nausea and sore breasts, plus the bloating. For further reading here is a book on Blighted Ovum: Symptoms, Causes And Treatments, Diet And Remedies However, what we are talking about in this case are whether there are specific signs that your pregnancy may be a blighted ovum pregnancy.
Blighted ovum symptoms may be few and far between, if you get any symptoms at all and can be totally normal symptoms of pregnancy. The majority of people who suffer with a blighted ovum do not realise that anything is wrong at all until they have an ultrasound. Your body was producing pregnancy hormones and you were for all intents and purposes carrying the start of a new life. The truth is that it is very difficult, if not impossible, to tell if you have a blighted ovum just by your symptoms and really the only way to know for sure is by having the ultrasound scan done so that they can look at your uterus and determine if there is an embryo present or not or just the gestational sac.
Because the body will still think that you are pregnant, it is entirely possible that you will get through your first trimester without knowing that you have a blighted ovum. Obviously this can be very distressing to get to 12 weeks when you think you are over the worst part and find that the embryo never developed. This is only going to happen though in places where the first scan that you get is not until the 12 weeks mark like in the UK if you do not have a history of pregnancy problems.
The majority of blighted ovum pregnancies are diagnosed much earlier than 12 weeks however, so it is highly unlikely that you will get as far as 12 weeks and then be diagnosed. Most women will either experience spotting or cramping, have an ultrasound, or start to miscarry earlier than 12 weeks. Many find out between 6 and 9 weeks in fact, judging from the many stories of women who have had blighted ova.

The beginning of first trimester was difficult; not only because of constant nausea, but also because I was told that I was definitely having a miscarriage. Since we experienced miscarriage in our pregnancy before Baby, you can imagine that this was quite the emotional roller coaster for us. Here is our story: We have moved since the time when I was pregnant with Baby, so I made my first pregnancy appointment with a reputable practice of midwives and doctors.
Although I had never been to this practice, they are the affiliate practice of the midwives that I saw during my pregnancy with Baby. She seemed kind, knowledgeable, and empathetic. Since I was breastfeeding Baby, I had only had a few periods of varying length, so she wanted to do an ultrasound to date the pregnancy. I am pretty methodical with dates so I shared the exact dates of my cycle, as well as the date of conception. Nancy still expected to see the baby measuring 6 weeks, although by my calculations, it certainly seemed possible that I was not quite there yet.
During the transvaginal ultrasound, I could immediately tell that Nancy did not like what she was seeing on the screen. She told me that this appeared to be a miscarriage because the fetus was not where it should be as far as development. Back in the examining room, I clearly stated my thoughts about the dating over and over again. We looked at a calendar, we went through the range of possible ovulation and implantation dates, and I basically pushed the conversation as far as it could go.
